Will the Kratom Leaf Drug Send Teens into Rehab? Are there drug addiction dangers?

New Legal High, Banned in Thailand, has side effects similar to opiates.

Many teens are trying a new drug known as Kratom, which is derived from an Asian plant. The drug provides a sense of energy and euphoria, and acts on opioid receptors in the brain, which makes withdrawal similar to that of opiate (oxycontin, heroin, morphine, vicodin) users. Kratom leaf is sold as an herbal painkiller, and is said to relieve depression and make social interactions more interesting. There are even claims that it enhances communication and social skills, so people with anxiety disorders are tempted to try the kratom drug. However, the downsides of Kratom use are anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, and agression. Withdrawal symptoms including chills, muscle aches, goosebumps, and nausea are very similar to those of heroin withdrawal, and from a drug treatment point of view there are real dangers that people may be seeking rehabilitation centers in higher numbers as a result of this plant.
